Photobucket survey reveals online photo and video trends

Photobucket Logo Photobucket has released the results of its Summer 2011 Photo Usage survey. This survey followed the habits and attitudes of participants regarding images and video capturing over the span of this summer.

One of the prime findings of the survey underlines the use of mobile phones over conventional video recording devices for shooting videos. It says that 45 percent of the participants used mobile phones at least once a week to shoot videos. 17 percent did this once a day, while 9 percent shot several videos in a day using mobile phones.

“Due to the growing adoption of smartphones, devices such as GPS systems, alarm clocks, watches and more are becoming displaced, so it’s no surprise that video cameras are on the chopping block as well. As this explosive growth continues, we will respond with even more product features for video uploading options and apps that will allow consumers to more easily capture, edit and share their digital memories,” said Tom Munro, CEO of Photobucket.

In relation to this, the company data also shows that video uploads from mobile devices has grown 14 times since December 2010. According to the Photobucket Summer 2011 Photo Usage survey, there is 6 percent decrease in the use of digital cameras since last year’s holiday survey. As far as uploads are concerned, the website data reports mobile uploads increasing 5x every year, with over 25 million records per month.

Apart from this, the survey also noticed the lack of a centralized photo sharing system. It reveals that 41 percent of survey participants upload images on three different sites. 12 percent use four image sharing websites while 15 percent of them use five or more uploading options.

It also reveals a finding that contrasts to the current day mobile app market growth. According to the survey, 46 percent participants never use any mobile apps for capturing personal images. However, the 20 percent section who use it report to be doing this at least once a day.

The Photobucket Summer 2011 Photo Usage survey was conducted among 2, 510 respondents in the period of July 2011. Additionally, it also used data from over 100 million Photobucket users.
