With a view to providing developers with hardware for testing apps based on the latest RIM software, the BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha device has been unveiled. This is a prototype handset which has been provided to developers attending the BlackBerry 10 Jam that began on May 1 in Orlando.

It is important to note, that the device will not serve as a regular BlackBerry smartphone, nor will it operate on the aforesaid system. It’s primarily built for developing purposes related to the new OS and will run the alpha version of the same.

As for its principal specifications, it carries a 4.2-inch display proffering 1280 × 768p resolutions. The package contains a micro-USB for charging and servicing purposes. Apart from these attributes, it entails an HDMI port for streaming content onto larger displays.

“It’s important to get this prototype into the hands of our partners now so that you can help us deliver the type of high-quality content that will make BlackBerry 10 so special. With the BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha, you can test your apps on real hardware to work out interface, ergonomic and usability issues,” states a post on the official BlackBerry blog.

This phone supports Bluetooth and Wi-Fi radios as well as a micro-SIM card, giving it a wireless ready status. With it, developers can test apps for issues related to the working, interface and design elements of the new software. This initiative has primarily been taken following the requests of concerned parties.

Moreover, developers can build interesting applications for the BlackBerry 10 OS with the BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha phone. No precise details on the release date and price of BlackBerry 10 devices have been mentioned so far.
